7-D-1 BCE Lesson Plan "Teaching Safe Behavior"

Class and Grade: Algebra II, High School, 10th or 11th grade
Objectives: To teach students safe, responsible behavior when blogging.
Procedure and Activities:

We will be using blogging in our Algebra II class. I will have a teacher’s blog that my students will be asked to post to and they will also have their own blogs where they post information and comments. Therefore, it is essential that I take a class period to teach about blogging “safely.”
I will begin the lesson with a youtube video such as the following found at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dT1GvPQG904. The video is a public service message about thinking before you post. Then, I will put the students in groups and ask them to come up with a list of specific information about themselves that they think should never be posted online. When they are done, I will see how many of their answers match my list:
  • Address
  • Last Name
  • Password
  • Phone Number
  • E-mail address
  • Detailed physical description
  • Detailed location where you can be found on a given day and time
  • Photos of yourself

I will explain to the students that I will be sending a letter home asking permission for students to be able to participate in publishing online.
I will outline “Blogging Terms and Conditions” similar to that found in Richardson’s Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms on page 16. Then, I will put the students in groups again and ask them to come up with three conditions they think would be important for us to follow as a classroom. I will share my conditions with the groups, after they have shared theirs.
Conditions will include the following:
1) Keep personal information out of posts, as discussed above.
2) Students agree not to share usernames or passwords.
3) Students are expected to treat the blog spaces as classroom spaces. Therefore, appropriate speech is expected.
4) Subjects should be kept school-appropriate.
5) Software should not be downloaded or installed without permission.
6) Any student who does not abide by these conditions may lose the opportunity to be able to participate in classroom blogging.
